Ronda is a lesser known region for quality dry white and red wines. In recent years however, Ronda winemakers have been revitalizing the potential of this historic winemaking region, putting Ronda back on the map as a first class destination for enotourism. In 2001, the area obtained an official sub-appellation, “D.O. – Serranía de Ronda”. Currently there are 23 bodegas (wineries) and an area of approximately 250 ha of vineyards. In 2013, Ronda was included in the official wine routes that can be found throughout the country.
The Serranía de Ronda mountains have special climate features and a unique geological diversity, giving the wines their distinctive character. The highest production grounds in the entire area, far above sea-level, can be found here. Winters are cold and humid, whereas summers are hot. There is also a daily variation in temperature, with warm days and cooler nights. Growing conditions are ideal for certain grape varieties such as Cabernet, Sauvignon, Merlot Shyrah & tempranillo (red) and Chardonnay, Macabeo & Sauvignon Blanc (white).
Like Ronda itself, the wines are monumental, patient and tranquil. Wines from the area being valued with increasing regard both locally and internationally. The best wines produced show a powerful ripeness and intensity of fruit, balanced by good acidity, generally with a fruity bouquet which is attenuated in the aged wines, imbuing them with complexity and their own unique aromas. On the palate, they are full-bodied wines with a deep lingering flavour, all the richer and more unctuous when left to mature.
